In many running competitions, race medals are issued to the participants after passing the finish line. Everytime, I am happy get my race medal and I proudly wear it around my neck until I arrive at home. But what next?
Where to put all the nice souvenirs that express what you already accomplished and what should be a motivation for upcoming race?
At the beginning of 2013, the year I started running in competitions, the number of medals I earned was pretty low. But at the end of the season, I collected that much that I started thinking about where to put them. Storing them in a dark box where nobody could see them would have been a pity.
Browsing through the internet, I found pictures of large bear statues draped with race medals or curtains and even Christmas trees decorated with these medals. Those ideas came from German runners. However, in the US, the country that helped making running popular, you can find offers for so called medal hangers. Some made of metal, some made of wood and sometimes with a funny slogan or hangers for the classic race distances like marathon or half-marathon. You just hang your medals like on a wardrobe.
Since I really liked that way of showing my race medals, but had no chance to get such a medal hanger to Germany, I just started to build my own one. All I needed was a towel rail, a wooden board, some glaze and/or paint, a selfmade pattern and a spray can with silver paint for the slogan that suited myself best. It took less than half a day and the medal hanger was made and ready to be put on the wall with hook for paintings.
So, for all of you that are not too busy and like to craft a little, this should be an inspiration to build your own special medal hanger to show your hard-earned race bling.
